Negative Press Event: Martin Crawley and Jane Wildgoose in Bow, 17 June 2017

On Saturday 17 June, Negative Press London presented an intimate exhibition and salon-style event, which took place at Martin Crawley’s home and studio in Bow, London E3. Martin Crawley and Jane Wildgoose exhibited together for the first time for this special one-off event.

Martin exhibited three works from Arcadia, a commentary on ideas of the picturesque and its eighteenth century beginnings, the starting point of which was a set of 1950s postcards published by the British Museum of prints and drawings by Claude Lorraine.

Jane exhibited Lost But Not Forgotten, a work-in-progress inspired by nineteenth century amateur women hairworkers who made flowers from the hair of family and friends, which they entwined in commemorative wreaths and displayed on parlour walls.

Both discussed their art and read from their books published by Negative Press London.

A Visit to the Archives | Reviewed by Material Texts Network

A belated post. Dennis Duncan has reviewed ‘A Visit to the Archives’ by Jane Wildgoose – the essay that appears in Strong Room for the Material Texts Network.

He writes, “Wildgoose’s writing is carefully resonant. The short essay is organised around quietly suggested parallels. The digital index of the archive’s catalogue is set alongside the evocative power of the book which ‘calls up’ the memory of Wildgoose’s father’s death three decades before.”

Strong Room | Reviewed in Source magazine

Strong Room has been reviewed in the spring issue of Irish photography magazine Source Photographic Review by Daniel Jewesbury.

He writes, “Here are tiny individual deaths, of experience and knowledge and tactile memory, quotidian interactions between the mental and the physical, in the old ‘real’ world, that world which, we now know, is merely a huge explanatory model of digital information, like those coloured balls connected with white sticks that are used to demonstrate atomic structures; a model where things with mass and dimensions in space represent data forms which, in truth, have neither. The book captures the passing into irrelevance, or historical curiosity, of the world model, and its simplicity is the key to its power.”

Strong Room | Kaleid 2014

Strong Room has been selected for a curated exhibition showcasing the best new European artists’ books at KALEID 2014 on Saturday 19 July in London.

Fifty new European artists’ books were selected by David Senior, Bibliographer at MoMA Library, New York; Elizabeth James, Senior Librarian at the National Art Library at the V&A Museum, London and Sofie Dederen, Director of the Frans Masereel Centrum, Kasterlee, Belgium.

Elizabeth James, Senior Librarian, National Arts Library, V&A Museum explains:

“William Morris, Picasso, Sonia Delaunay, Ed Ruscha, Anselm Kiefer: many of the greatest modern artists and designers have excelled themselves in the book format. The book offers artists sculptural and temporal formats, collaborative stimulus, and the opportunity to reach an audience in a particularly intimate way. KALEID editions make a real contribution to the arts by encouraging today’s artists and designers to ‘do books’, in awareness both of the great tradition and of the now. It carefully fosters appreciation, distribution and conversation among artists, critics and collectors, private and institutional. Far from killing the book, the digital information has made it exciting. People want to mix with books in real space: book fairs spring up almost every week. KALEID 2014 is especially valuable in mixing work from across Europe into the British scene, selected for conceptual strength and excellence of making.”

The exhibition is free to attend, tickets are available through the website. KALEID 2014
